The Central Park of Munich, Hofgarten (Court Garden), is the oldest city park, created in the Italian style in 1613-1617. The park is limited by arcade galleries from both sides. German Museum Theater is at the northern part, at the western part there are frescos of Peter von Cornelius. The southern boundary of the park is formed by the facade of the Munich Hofgarten Residence palace, the eastern part homes the Bavarian State Chancellery (Staatskanzlei). In the centre of Hofgarten “the Temple of Diana” (Dianatempel) - pavilion built in 1615, is located. Paths, determined the park’s structure, lead from each of the eight pavilion’s arches. The pavilion hosts concerts in the evenings; in the summer (from May to September) on Wednesday they dance Salsa here, on Friday night - Argentine tango; during the day street musicians entertain park visitors.
Hofgarten was destroyed during the Second World War. Reconstructed Hofgarten is a stylistic compromise between English landscape park of the middle of the XIX th century, and the original design of the park of XVII th century.
