Hamburg - the Free Hanseatic city, having a status of a federal state. It is located to the north of Germany, in Lower Saxony, on both banks of the Elbe, about 110 km to the south-east of the river’s confluence into the North Sea. Port of Hamburg is one of the largest in Europe. Urban neighborhoods on both sides of the Elbe are connected with numerous bridges and two tunnels.
The first settlement appeared here already in VIII th century. At the end of the twelfth century, the city has received considerable commercial privileges. In the Middle Ages Hamburg entered the Hanseatic League of Nordic countries. Discovery of America and sea routes to Asia has made Hamburg one of the most important ports in Europe. During the Second World War the city suffered from considerable bombing and was severely damaged.
Today Hamburg is the green city with parks, rivers, channels and lakes. In the heart of the city Lake Alster, which area is larger than the principality of Monaco, is situated. In the city’s centre there are also the building of Town Hall, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, the church of St. Michael with 132-meter \"Michel\" tower, the Church of St. Peter with the magnificent sculpture of the Virgin Mary (1470), the Gothic church of St. James, famous for the largest in Northern Germany Baroque organ, the church of St. Catherine (XIII century) and the Church of St. Nicholas.
University of Hamburg is one of the largest not only in Germany but throughout Europe.
Variety of Hamburg museums is amazing: Art Gallery and Gallery of Contemporary Arts (Kunsthalle Hamburg), Historical and ethnographic museums, the Museum of Modern Art (Deichtorhallen), the Museum of erotica and many others. On Sunday, be sure to visit the famous Fishmarkt, existed since 1703. And, finally, Riperban - the world-famous \"red lights district, with countless discos, restaurants, bars and pubs.
