Halkidiki is one of the most environmentally clean centers of tourism in Greece. At beaches and resorts of the peninsula are created excellent conditions for water entertainment - windsurfing, diving, etc.
Halkidiki consists of 3 peninsulas (“fingers”), like a trident of the Sea God Poseidon, piercing the Aegean Sea. The first "finger" is named in honor of Cassandr - the Macedonian king (VI century BC). This is the most popular of the Chalkidiki "fingers", famous for its picturesque sandy beaches, pine groves, magnificent bays and fishing villages. Cape Kassandra is home to a great number of hotels of different categories. The Peninsula has rich historical past, outgoing to deep antiquity. Afitis and Kallithea, the cities, first mention of which dates from the VIII century BC, are famous with sanctuaries of Zeus and Dionysus, the ruins of which have survived to present day.
The second "finger" - Sithonia, named after the giant Sithon, is known not only for pristine corners of unspoiled nature, small, cozy harbors and bays, olive groves (where, according to a legend, nymph Persephone was abducted by Hephaestus), but also for comfortable hotels of any class with a variety of sporting and cultural services.
The third "finger" - Athos, named after the giant Athos,) is known, primarily because its territory homes the world's only Orthodox Monastic Republic of Mount Athos, with numerous monasteries, which has existed for 1000 years since Byzantine times. The Athos peninsula was considered to be a sacred place from ancient times. Ancient Greeks built here a number of temples dedicated to Apollo and Zeus. The peninsula is very picturesque and has a network of high-class hotels.
