The name translates in English as "Sunshine Coast". The area's mild climate is the root attraction that makes it possible to enjoy the beaches and a wide variety of outdoor activities year round.

The Costa del Sol stretches along just over 150 kilometers of Málaga province. Formerly made up only of a series of small, quiet fishing settlements, the region has been completely transformed during the latter part of the 20th century into a tourist destination of world renown, with a near-continuous urban agglomeration of high-rise settlements and resorts running along the length of the coastline.
Settlement in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, and it has been colonized and ruled by many cultures such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors, before the Reconquista. Away from the coast there are numerous excursions into the real Spain: the beautiful and historical town of Ronda (It lays some 60km up a winding mountain road from Marbella), the unique atmosphere of Seville, the historic city of Cordoba and Granada all accessible for day tours. A full day excursion from the Costa del Sol to the Moorish city of Granada is really fascinating. It includes a visit the Alhambra Palace, famous fortress and supreme monument of Arabic architecture and gipsy quarters of the Albaicin. On a full day excursion to the Rock of Gibraltar a tourist will be able to learn something of its long and fascinating history. An excursion in the will enable visitors to know the real Andalusia. The western part of the coast is highly developed in terms of both property and infrastructure and it attracts an important percentage of Spain's international tourism. There is Malaga city, the center of province. Nerja is the most important urban centre on eastern coast and has grown rapidly. This town also has one of this area's main tourist attractions - the Nerja Caves, a spectacular find that is open to the public and that hosts an annual music and dance festival within its famous caverns. There are around 70 Costa del Sol golf courses on the "Costa del Golf" which can be played all year round as well as a whole range of other activities available such as sailing, scuba diving, horse riding, dolphin safaris, etc.
