The Azores is considered by many has one of the best places in the world for scuba diving. It is in the ocean that the greatest wealth of the Azores lies, with an abundance of hundreds of species of fish and shell-fish and large mammals such as the sperm whale and the dolphin. The islands' coast provides the ideal place for sailing, windsurfing, rowing and surfing.
Underwater observation offers a treasure chest of wonders on every island. Sao Miguel, Terceira and Faial have supporting facilities for this sport. Good water visibility and temperature are common. The mixture of coastal and oceanic wildlife on the same dive spots is our best feature. During night dives travelers can see the dazzling colours of huge swarms of small shrimps, as well as nudibranchs, Alicia mirabilis anemones, and, depending on the time of the year, also bioluminescent plankton.
The waters around the Azores islands are perfect spots to catch sightings of whales and dolphins. Whales usually spotted are: Sperm, Northern Bottlenose, Pilot, Sowerby’s Beaked and occasionally Orca’s.
