Countdown to EuroBasket 2013 – less than half a year...
Less than half a year before the start of the Championship, Slovenia is in the final preparation phase for the largest European basketball event – EuroBasket 2013, which will take place between 4 and 22 September 2013. This is not merely the largest sports event in the history of Slovenia, but also an opportunity for Slovenia, Ljubljana and other host towns to show their best to the European basketball elite and their fans.
Slovenia is the smallest country in the history of the event to host the European Basketball Championship and the first country selected unanimously to be the organiser of the event − FIBA Europe awarded Slovenia with the organisation of EuroBasket 2013 on 5 December 2010 at the meeting of the Executive Committee of FIBA Europe in Munich. Since then, Slovenia has worked hard to prepare for the Championship and with fewer than 6 months before the event, it is waiting expectantly and counting down the days.
The Championship will take place in four Slovenian towns, all less than an hour’s drive from the capital of Ljubljana. The first round of the Championship will take place in Ljubljana, Celje, Jesenice and Koper, while the second round and finals will be hosted by Ljubljana alone.
Since the beginning of 2013, Slovenia has fully presented itself on foreign markets through this sports event. Moreover, Ljubljana especially embraced the event for its promotional activities, since, besides the fact that it is the capital of Slovenia, it has a special place within the Championship; namely, games will be played in Ljubljana throughout the Championship as well as during the second and final stages of the event.
The capital Ljubljana is being presented as a town that lives with the pulse of this important sports event. Besides meetings with the media and various presentations and events, Slovenia has promoted this Championship at all the main promotional events abroad as through a huge billboard with the ambassador of the event, Rašo Nesterović, playing basketball on the famous Plečnik`s masterpiece Three Bridges in Ljubljana. Furthermore, a lot of focus has been directed toward Ljubljana`s mascots – the Ljubljana dragon and the official EuroBasket 2013 mascot – Lipko.
With regard to the EuroBasket, Ljubljana Tourism has set two objectives: the primary objective is to enchant visitors with the capital`s tourist offer, so that these visitors will return to Ljubljana as private guests with their families and friends; the secondary objective is to extend the stays by guests in Ljubljana during the Championship.
EuroBasket visitors will have at their disposal special programs in Ljubljana that include culinary-adrenaline events, such as rowing on the Ljubljanica River, a helicopter trip above Central Slovenia, adrenaline experiences at Geoss adventure park, hiking along the Iški Vintgar gorge and the shepherd`s paths on Velika planina – all within reach and just a couple of minutes away from Ljubljana. Ljubljana has already presented the programmes on all the main fairs this year, such as FITUR Madrid, BIT Milano, ITB Berlin – and got a great response. At the same time, Ljubljana is presented as a destination that is `impossible to ignore`– especially this year, due to EuroBasket 2013, which is also evident from the EuroBasket 2013 billboards at Jože Pučnik Ljubljana Airport.
