Select the country and object's type Remembering Pearl Harbor

Today, as we mark the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we honor the memory of the more than 2,400 men and women who perished during the bombing of the Hawaiian naval base. Like 9/11, it was a devastating foreign attack on U.S. soil that shook our country and compelled us to come together in response. We should all be thankful and salute the courage of those who responded to the attack that day. One of those heroes, United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye, has been a true champion of memorials that are so important to our nation\'s history. For years, the Senator worked to support the creation of the USS Arizona Memorial and today, he continues to be an advocate for vital federal support of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Members of the Eastern Long Island Pipe and Drum will play at the 9/11 Memorial today in commemoration of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. As we pause to remember the lives lost, our thoughts are also with the many heroes who have served and continue to serve our country at home and abroad.

Superstorm Sandy: An Important 9/11 Memorial Update

Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc up and down the East Coast, with some of the greatest impacts occurring in lower Manhattan. Our thoughts remain with those who lost loved ones and the many who are still struggling in the wake of the storm\'s devastation.

Like so many in the area, we continue to work to recover from Sandy\'s impact. The 9/11 Memorial Visitor Center and screening center were severely damaged due to flooding and remained closed for almost three weeks while necessary repairs were made and equipment was replaced. More than six feet of storm water poured into the Museum\'s construction site, presenting new challenges as we work towards opening the Museum\'s doors.

As you consider your year-end charitable giving, we ask for your support to help the 9/11 Memorial Museum move forward from Sandy\'s devastation.

We are reminded, as we were after 9/11, that when faced with the most extraordinary challenges, together, we can recover and rebuild.

9/11 Memorial Chopper Returns

In 2011, Paul Teutul, Jr. and his team at Paul Jr. Designs built a custom motorcycle that commemorates the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and donated it to the 9/11 Memorial. It has since been placed on display in the Memorial\'s Visitor Center. In the wake of Sandy, the Visitor Center and the tribute bike were damaged. Soon after the storm, Paul Jr. and his crew carefully removed the bike for repairs.

Featured on an episode of the Discovery Channel show \"American Choppers\" that aired this month, Paul Jr. restored the motorcycle to its original glory.

On November 26, the chopper was reinstalled in the Visitor Center. Governor Andrew Cuomo and 9/11 Memorial Board Member Dan Tishman, who commissioned the tribute bike, welcomed its return.

Museum Collections Highlight: Helmet and Jacket Donated by a Ground Zero Recovery Worker

As he watched live television broadcasts of the 9/11 attacks, native New Yorker Manuel (\"Manny\") Rodriguez knew that his hometown needed him. Rodriguez, a member of the Teamsters Union, was an experienced truck operator and worked on major construction jobs through New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. After learning that skilled drivers were needed for the Ground Zero recovery effort, Rodriguez resigned from his job, rejoined his union, and worked at Ground Zero until the site was cleared in May 2002.

Rodriguez recently presented the 9/11 Memorial Museum with his patch-laden Teamsters Union jacket, the hard hat he wore at Ground Zero, and a sculpture of the Twin Towers forged from World Trade Center steel. His gift was one of the first to document the important presence and contributions of Teamsters Union members at the World Trade Center site.

November Business Spotlight of the Month: Businesses Affected by Superstorm Sandy

Many of our 9/11 Memorial Signs of Support businesses in lower Manhattan were affected by power outages and flooding in the days following Sandy. Help support the continuing recovery by becoming a patron of one of these businesses. Stop in for lunch at O\'Hara\'s Restaurant & Pub on Cedar Street or volunteer your time to restore the South Street Seaport. To show our support, the 9/11 Memorial recognized those businesses affected by featuring them as spotlight businesses for the Month of November.
