The Santa Chiara museum, in fact, displays some collectible rarities, real cult objects like juke boxes, pinball machines, record players, vinyl records, the autograph lithographic prints of John Lennon and the icons of the Beatles, who opened up to the contamination of music genres, from classical to jazz and folk music, inventing a style that led pop music to be respected at all levels. There will also be original works by Andrea Rauch, an internationally renowned designer and illustrator. Some of his posters are part of the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

The torchlight procession goes up to the Cjastelàt (the ancient castle of the Frangipanes) guided by the Old Venerable Man, a symbolic grandfather and story-teller figure who lights the Pignarûl Grant (Big Bonfire) and, according to the smoke direction, foretells the new year’s trend. Manso infiocao
Friuli Venezia Giulia’s sea provides a charming atmosphere in winter as well: Grado, in fact, recalls one of its renowned traditions linked to an important event in the island’s history, the “Manso infiocao”: in 1162 thanks to the intervention of the Doge of Venice with his soldiers, the Patriarch of Aquileia Voldarigo and some feudatories were prevented from invading the island. In order to have their lives saved, the defeated accepted the annual payment, on every last Thursday before Lent, of a tribute destined to the poor of the island, which consisted of 12 pigs and a steer, which has become the symbol of the event and after which the re-enactment was named (“manso infiocao” in Grado’s dialect means “beribboned steer”).
