Aalto University – creating a better city, worldwide
The Aalto University’s World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme, Living+, creates better living environments in the spirit of sustainable design. The programme includes over 30 different projects whose premise is to establish pleasant living and natural environments.
“The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012’s message is ‘Let\'s make a better city’; thus, the Aalto University\'s World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 projects are an integral part of the activities. By combining art, economy and technology, the Aalto University can bring about entirely new solutions for better everyday life. Our main projects are all good examples of this, and they have stirred international interest too,” Dean Helena Hyvönen from Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture says.
The Aalto University is one of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012’s biggest content producers. Hundreds of people from the university participate: students, teachers, researchers, staff and alumni. The projects are carried out in close cooperation with numerous partners and experts from different industries.
In addition to Finland, the Aalto University’s end-of-the-year projects will be seen worldwide. The Pavilion, which has received a lot of coverage both in Finland and abroad, will be introduced in the Venice Architecture Biennale’s New Forms in Wood exhibition between 29 August and 25 November 2012. The Pavilion is an open living-room which connects the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum and is a modern example of Finnish wood building skills and competence.
Other international events:
- Aalto Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE), 14 to 23 September, London Design Festival
- 365 Wellbeing, Design Cares exhibition, 20 to 28 October, Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven
- Masters of Aalto, Next Design exhibition, 25 October to 4 November, Radical Design Week, Shanghai
The Aalto University will continue its World Design Capital cooperation with Cape Town, the next World Design Capital in 2014, and its university.
