6 Scenes of Beauty
The Vantaa Art Museum exhibition ‘6 Scenes of Beauty’ juxtaposes design and fine art in a new and intriguing way.
The exhibition artists are designer Nathalie Lähdenmäki, graphic designer Rami Niemi, designer Naoto Niidome, fashion designer Tuula Pöyhönen, sculptor Tommi Toija, artist Anna Tuori, graphic designer Teemu Väätäinen and artist Maaria Wirkkala.
The exhibition theme is beauty. Beauty is a universal concept, which each of us nevertheless experiences subjectively. What one person perceives as beautiful, another may find ugly – there are no right or wrong answers to what is beautiful. Different periods and cultures have interpreted beauty in their own way, and an artist or designer always has his or her own unique view of it.
We often justify our object world by citing other virtues – ecology, practicality, making a statement, but in the final analysis, it is beauty that makes us become attached to things and keep them.
The exhibition consists of six parallel but distinct dioramas. A diorama is a partially three-dimensional model of a landscape or a scene depicting an event or situation. Each diorama is created by a different artist, designer or working partnership. The dioramas strongly reflect their makers’ personalities, they are experiential and narrative entities. The artists interpret the exhibition theme from their own viewpoints, making a statement on the dialogue of art and design.
The exhibition is accompanied by a varied programme of events for all age groups. You can also see the exhibition via a parallel showcase in the departures area of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, with real-time images from Vantaa Art Museum simulated on screens.
