UPDATE ON THE KIWAYU INCIDENT
Following the tragic events that took place at Kiwayu Safari Village on Sunday, KTF wishes to give the following update:
Investigations into the incident are continuing and a heavy security presence is currently in the Kiwayu area. The raid continues to be treated as an isolated incident and it is the first reported incident of its kind in Kenya.
Kenya Tourism Federation officials and tourism stakeholders in the area met with Senior Government security officials yesterday to receive an update on the on-going investigations into the incident and explore modalities for the way forward. As a result of the meeting it was confirmed that one suspect is in custody and investigations are continuing to unravel the events of that fateful day.
Two key outcomes the meeting were: -
1. There remains heightened security in the area and a security assessment of Kiwayu and the immediate environs will be carried out as a matter of urgency – currently Kiwayu Safari Lodge remains temporarily closed and its re-opening is highly dependent on the outcome of the security assessment.
2. The private sector will also spearhead an internal Security Audit aimed at to identifying any other locations that may require to have enhanced security. This is merely an added precaution coming in the wake of the recent incident and KTF wishes to stress that Camps and Lodges within the tourist circuits already have in place stringent security measures to ensure the safety of their guests.
Our heartfelt condolences to go out to the family and friends of the bereaved family and our prayer is that Mrs. Judith Tebutt will be returned safe and sound.
Following enquiries being received from overseas clients and Agents, we reiterate that the Tourism Industry will not be conducting any tours within 30Kms of the Kenya-Somali Border. It is believed that the location of the exclusive Lodge, more specifically the proximity to the Kenya-Somalia
border, may have had a bearing on the matter.
We further confirm that tours and safaris to the rest of the Kenya Coast and up-country circuits (Parks and Reserved) continue as normal. We shall keep updating you as more details become available.
